Building better food systems demands that youth and women play a central role—that’s what Africa’s Food Systems Forum 2023 Summit asserts. The conference, which takes place from September 5-8 with a pre-summit day on September 4, brings together investors, governments, partners, farmers, and other key stakeholders to engage in a series of conversations about how to drive sustainable food systems transformation. AgResults and Land O’Lakes Venture37 are proud to lead a pre-summit panel on September 4 that looks at the role that gender inclusion can and should play in dairy sector transformation across Tanzania.

The conference’s theme, “Recover, Regenerate, Act: Africa’s Solutions to Food Systems Transformation,” reflects that a multipronged approach blending policy and innovation is crucial to building food systems that are resilient and adaptive to changing climates and external shocks. This theme supports the Forum’s focus on targeting women and youth and supporting investment in inclusive and sustainable food systems transformation.

As part of the pre-summit day on September 4 at 11 a.m. EAT, AgResults is co-hosting a panel with Land O’Lakes Venture37 titled “Gender-Inclusive Dairy in Tanzania.” Tanzania’s smallholder dairy farms have historically exhibited a stark division of labor: Women are overwhelmingly involved in day-to-day livestock management while men dominate higher-value work such as milk sales and formal market engagement. It is critical to bridge these gender gaps, strengthen productivity, and improve nutritional outcomes among rural populations.

This panel will explore how strategic investments in Tanzania’s dairy sector can deepen women’s autonomy as decisionmakers and make the value chain more resilient and inclusive. Representatives from the AgResults Tanzania Dairy Challenge Project and the Dairy Nourishes Africa – Building Inclusive Livelihoods through Dairy (DNA-BILD) project will discuss interventions that engage public and private sectors to strengthen farmers’ technical knowledge and management practices. After providing an overview of each project, the presenters will engage with the moderator for a series of discussion questions, followed by audience Q&A.

The full list of speakers includes:

The AgResults Tanzania Dairy Challenge Project is a four-year Pay-for-Results prize competition that aims to increase dairy productivity in the country by encouraging private sector input suppliers to deliver inputs to smallholder farmers. By providing a prize for each bundle of high-quality inputs delivered, the competition hopes to increase animal productivity, boost smallholder farmers’ incomes, and strengthen value chain relationships between dairy producers and the formal dairy sector.

Dairy Nourishes Africa – Building Inclusive Livelihoods through Dairy (DNA-BILD) is working to enable inclusive, climate-smart economic development in Tanzania’s dairy sector. The program aims to reach resource-poor, opportunity-constrained stakeholders across the dairy value chain that would otherwise not be engaged, particularly women and youth. It is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperative Agency (SIDA).

AgResults and Land O’Lakes Venture37 look forward to engaging Forum participants through this session and contributing to the larger conversation about inclusion, resilience, and food systems taking place throughout the week.
